I may have athsma and my doctor prescribed me the advair inhaler and I was wondering what side effects you had and how bad were they? Oh and it's an "inhaled steroid"...is it like any other steroid you hear about or is it good for you?
Advair is a combination of flovent (inhaled steroid) and serevent (long lasting bronchodialator). Unless you are a black male your risk of serious side effects from Serevent (and therefore Advair) is very very low and only if you are using serevent alone without an inhaled steroid.
The most common side effect is thrush if you don't rinse after using and dry mouth (which can lead to increased cavities)
Inhaled steroids are cortosteroids, not anabolic steroids. They help control inflammation in the body. In the case of asthma the inflammation that is the underlying cause of asthma (asthma has two components..the silent inflammation and the noisy bronchospasms). Inhaled steroids are one of the safest medications (either natural or allopathic)available because they are almost entirely non-systemic. Meaning they go directly into the lungs and what is not needed to control the inflammation is quickly excreted by the body without any buildup in any other organs. At dosages below 800 mgs a day there are few if any health concerns (FOR MOST PEOPLE, of course as with anything there are exceptions to this)

ETA to address below. Advair is not for use as treatment of a flare. It is a maitanence medication. If you try to treat a flare with Advair it could lead to death, because you are not treating the flare! Death would not be because of the Advair. You treat flares with emergency bronchodialators like albuterol.
